THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 'Sudhamayi Sudhanidhi...' Amrita is unable to see the audience who are enjoying themselves while nodding their heads to the beat while she sings the kirtan in the Amritavarshini raga. This 19-year-old blind woman's strength is the standing ovation she gets after the concert. She has been performing concerts at Chembai Sangeetsavam in Guruvayur for seven years. Amrita, a second-year BA Music student of Govt Women's College, recently sang the film song 'Vijana Surabhi Vaadikalil...' at a private venue which went viral on social media. Amrita sang during the interval of the program. Many people realized that the girl who was singing with a cooling glass was visually impaired when they came running after hearing Amrita's sweet voice from outside.

Amrita, the youngest daughter of Indian Bank officer Satish Kumar and Beena, natives of Mavelikara, was blind from birth. Amrita had a premature birth. The increased amount of oxygen given in the incubator affected the retina of the eye and resulted in complete loss of vision. Three surgeries were performed but did not yield results. At the age of five, Amrita began to follow the rhythms of songs. Realizing Amrita's musical taste, her family made her debut under singer Anil Champakkara at the age of six. Amrita's parents are scared when she goes to stage performances as she gets sweaty and sick really fast. Satish shifted to Thiruvananthapuram for his daughter's music studies. Now they live in Vattiyoorkavu, Thiruvananthapuram. Amrita's sister is Aneesha (journalism diploma student).

Want to become a music teacher

Amrita's dream is to complete her degree and PG and become a music teacher. She is a singer in the group 'Vattiyoorkavu Vibe' formed under the leadership of Vattyoorkav MLA VK Prashanth. Amrita sings at Poojapura Saraswati Mandapam and Panachikkad Devi Temple on the occasion of Navratri.
